The Trail Of Tears Cherokee Legacy (DVD)
James Earl Jones, Wes Studi and James Garner

Award-winning DVD explores America’s darkest period: President Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the forced removal of the Cherokee Nation to Oklahoma in 1838. Nearly a quarter of the Cherokee National died during the Trail of Tears, arriving in Indian Territory with few elders and even fewer children. Presented by Wes Studi and narrated by James Earl Jones, “Trail of Tears Cherokee Legacy” has already captured an impressive array of awards.

~~ Journal of American History ~~
"Trail Of Tears Cherokee Legacy will remain the definitive film treatment of the subject for years to come. It is an eloquent retelling of an important chapter in early American history and it deserves to be viewed widely".

Noted actor James Earl Jones had previously provided his voice to Rich-Heape Films, Inc. award-winning documentary Black Indians: An American Story. Mr. Jones, who is of blended African and Cherokee heritage, narrates in his customary and convincing tones and will lead an already distinguished group of celebrity voices.

The best known Cherokee actor, Wes Studi, presents the documentary film, speaking on camera in his native tongue (with subtitles). Mr. Jones and Mr. Studi are supported by the celebrity voices of actor James Garner, singers Crystal Gayle, actor John Buttram and former Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder reading diary excerpts, and a host of historical experts from major universities.

Don't Get Sick After June: American Indian Healthcare
    Peter Coyote, August Schellenberg

Rich-Heape Films, Inc. proudly announces their latest documentary, “Don't Get Sick After June: American Indian Healthcare". On camera presentation by Peter Coyote & featuring: Ben Night Horse Campbell -Tim Giago - President Theresa Two Bulls - Principal Chief Chad Smith.

Native American owned Rich-Heape Films, producers of the multi-award winning “Trail of Tears Cherokee Legacy” and “Our Spirits Don’t Speak English: Indian Boarding School” chronicles the history of Indian healthcare from the early 1800’s to President Obama’s recent Healthcare Reform Act signed into law in 2010. This well-researched documentary presents a troubling portrait of the U.S. government's dismal failure to provide health care in fulfillment of federal treaty with American Indians.

Peter Coyote narrates, inviting viewers to engage in the national dialogue on health care from a native perspective. The powerful images and voices from some of the most vulnerable communities in Indian Country provide historical evidence of just how poorly health care services have been funded and managed, while hundreds of treaties promising health care, education and protected status in exchange for millions of acres of land, have continued to be dishonored and ignored by the federal government. Current perspectives are equally disheartening: the introduction and substitution of food commodities for traditional native diets is discussed as a major contributing factor to the alarming increase in diabetes, heart disease and other native health concerns.

Our Spirits Don't Speak English: Indian Boarding School (DVD)
    Gayle Ross

This High Definition DVD presents a Native American perspective on Indian Boarding Schools and uncovers the dark history of U.S. Government policy which took Indian children from their homes, forced them into boarding schools and enacted a policy of educating them in the ways of Western Society.

"Our Spirits Don't Speak English: Indian Boarding School" gives a voice to the countless Indian children forcibly taken from their homes and families and educated in boarding schools, as part of a governmental policy to "kill the Indian and spare the man". From 1869 through the late 1960's, more than 100,000 Native Americans had been compelled to attend Indian Boarding School. This DVD tells of growing up in a harsh world of strict rules, where speaking tribal languages was severely punished. A vivid reminder that America, land of the free, was not so free for some of its citizens until relatively recently in its history.

Gayle Ross is a descendent of John Ross, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation during and after the infamous Trail of Tears, the forced removal of many Southeastern Indians to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in the late 1830s. Her grandmother told stories and it is from this rich heritage that Gayle s storytelling springs. During the past twenty years, she has become one of the most respected storytellers to emerge from the current surge of interest in this timeless art form.

Black Indians: An American Story (DVD)
    James Earl Jones

“Black Indians: An American Story” (as seen on ABC) brings to light a forgotten part of Americans past – the cultural and racial fusion of Native and African Americans. Narrated by James Earl Jones, “Black Indians: An American Story” explores what brought the two groups together, what drove them apart and the challenges they face today. This educational DVD has captured an impressive array of awards.

This in-depth documentary examines the coalescence of these two groups in American history. Discounted, and often ignored by mainstream America, these minority peoples have often shared a common past. However, with their heritage ignored and their contributions denied they are all but invisible at the dawn of the new millennium.

“Black Indians: An American Story,” explores the issue of racial identity among Native and African Americans. This in-depth documentary examines the coalescence of these two groups in American history. Discounted, and often ignored by mainstream America, these minority peoples have often shared a common past. However, with their heritage ignored and their contributions denied they are all but invisible at the dawn of the new millennium.

It was a black and white world in the early days of the Republic and little or no thought was given to people of mixed race, especially if they looked "black.” “We were told ‘if you could pass for white, that's who you'd be; if not, it was usually better to be identified as black than Indian,’" recalls Executive Producer Steven Heape. "It was this kind of thinking that later led to ‘pencil genocide’--changing one’s race on a birth certificate to fit the skin color of the child.”
